Iu Mien, often just called Mien, is the language of the Mien (Yao) people from the hills of Laos, Thailand, Vietnam and southern China, and many families reached Canada through the refugee movements that followed the wars in Southeast Asia. Demand is modest and older speakers form much of it, so interpreting is often provided by telephone and video.

Mien is a distinct language, not a dialect of Lao, Thai, Vietnamese or Chinese, though many speakers also know one of those, so tell us the speaker's strongest language at booking. Older Mien speakers in particular may have limited English or Lao, which makes a Mien interpreter important in medical, legal and settlement appointments where detail matters.
The live settings are mainly healthcare, community and social services, IRCC family sponsorship and the occasional hearing, with the interpreter rendering speech in full and neutrally. Mien has a Latin-based writing system agreed in the 1980s, but it is not widely used for official records and many older speakers were never schooled in it, so documents in Mien are uncommon and translation often runs the other way. Where a personal note or recording in Mien exists we work from it with a qualified translator and mark anything uncertain.
The formal records in a Mien family's file are usually issued elsewhere - Thai or Lao refugee-camp papers, or documents in Lao, Thai or Chinese - and for these we provide a certified translation with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy, or a sworn affidavit before a commissioner of oaths where one is requested. Names are matched to the passport spelling; acceptance ultimately depends on the receiving institution.

Mien (Iu Mien) is a Hmong-Mien language spoken by around 800,000 people across southern China, northern Vietnam, Laos, and Thailand. Most Mien refugees who left Laos after the Vietnam War era were resettled in the United States, and the Mien community in Canada is small, part of the broader Southeast Asian refugee diaspora.
