When you book, tell us which Yue variety the speaker uses. Cantonese is the most widely served, but older members of long-established communities often speak Taishanese or another regional Yue that a Cantonese interpreter may not fully follow, and in a hearing or a medical appointment that gap matters. We also confirm whether the speaker uses any Mandarin, since the two are separate spoken languages.

Yue is a spoken branch of Chinese and has no separate everyday writing system, so documents from Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau are in Chinese characters, traditional or simplified, and certified translation runs from written Chinese rather than from spoken Yue. We provide a full English or French translation with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy, or a sworn affidavit before a commissioner of oaths where one is requested.
The records we handle most are household registration documents, birth, marriage and death certificates, Hong Kong and Macau identity and civil records, notarial certificates and police clearances, often carrying official seals that are translated rather than skipped. Names are transliterated to match the passport spelling, noting the difference between Cantonese and Mandarin romanisation; acceptance ultimately depends on the receiving institution.

Yue is the linguistic family name for Cantonese and its closely related varieties, spoken by around 85 million people primarily in Guangdong province, Hong Kong, Macau, and Guangxi -- see our Cantonese page for the major modern variety. One Yue variety, Toishanese (Hoisanese), has deep Canadian roots: migrants from the Taishan district were the majority of the Chinese labourers who built the Canadian Pacific Railway and settled the historic Chinatowns of Victoria, Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal through the head-tax and exclusion eras. Today the Yue-speaking community is one of Canada's largest, concentrated in Vancouver, Richmond, Toronto, and Markham.
