The reason to book Wenzhounese specifically is spoken interpreting. A Mandarin interpreter often cannot understand Wenzhounese, and even neighbouring Wu speech differs sharply, so for an older speaker who is not comfortable in Mandarin we match a genuine Wenzhou interpreter rather than assume a Mandarin one will do. Wenzhounese, or Oujiang, is a Wu Chinese variety spoken in and around Wenzhou in Zhejiang province, well known for being very hard for other Chinese speakers to understand. Like other Chinese varieties it has no separate everyday writing system: documents are written in standard written Chinese in simplified characters, the same as for Mandarin, so a Wenzhou family's paperwork is translated as a Chinese to English certified translation.
The records we see are birth, marriage and school certificates and the notarial certificates known as gongzheng issued through Chinese notary offices. We translate exactly what the source shows, keep the transliteration of names consistent between documents, and add nothing where a record is incomplete.
