Uyghur's standard script is the Uyghur Arabic alphabet, read right to left, though Latin and Cyrillic forms are also seen. Official civil records from China are frequently issued in Chinese rather than in Uyghur, so a certified translation may work from the hukou, identity cards or notarial certificates in Chinese as well as from any Uyghur-language document.
Documents commonly include birth, marriage and death records, the household registration, national identity cards, education certificates, and refugee or asylum papers. Given the sensitivity of many of these files, they are handled confidentially, and each translation is issued by a certified translator or accompanied by a sworn affidavit where a Canadian body asks for one. Uyghur is a Turkic language spoken by around 10-15 million people, primarily in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of northwestern China, plus diaspora communities in Central Asia, Turkey, and a growing presence in Canada.
