Swahili is widely understood across East Africa, but it helps to tell us the speaker's country, because a Congolese speaker from the eastern DRC, a coastal Kenyan and a Tanzanian may differ in accent and in the everyday vocabulary they use, and a Congolese claimant may also rely on French. In an Immigration and Refugee Board hearing an accurate first-person rendering matters, so we match the speaker's background rather than treating Swahili as uniform.

Certified Swahili translation is a real part of the work, though what needs translating varies by country. Tanzania uses Swahili widely in official documents, so Tanzanian records often are in Swahili, while Kenyan documents are frequently in English and Congolese documents are usually in French, which shapes whether a file is a Swahili, English or French translation.
