As a coastal lingua franca Susu holds together fairly evenly, but speakers arrive from Guinea, Sierra Leone and further afield, and many also carry French, Maninka or other regional tongues, so we settle the speaker's country and stronger language at booking. At a hearing, leaning on French in place of Susu can be a gamble where the exact wording counts.

Susu is written in a Latin-based alphabet, and some communities use Arabic-based Ajami for religious texts, but it is chiefly a spoken language and seldom appears on an official certificate. Guinea issues civil records in French, so a Susu speaker's birth, marriage or death certificate and school papers are normally translated from French into English rather than from Susu, and the Susu part of a file is most often the interpreting.
For a rural birth entered late, or an original that has gone missing, a sworn affidavit taken before a commissioner of oaths can travel with a translation to record how a name or date came to be fixed.
