Sesotho spoken in Lesotho and in South Africa differs slightly in vocabulary and usage but is broadly the same language, and it is partly intelligible with Sepedi and Setswana without being identical to them. At booking we confirm the speaker's country and that Sesotho, rather than a related Sotho-Tswana language, is the one needed.

Lesotho uses Sesotho and English officially and South Africa uses English, so many birth, marriage and school records a Sesotho speaker holds are already in English. Where translation is needed it is often for handwritten community or church registers, a chief's letter, an affidavit or an older record.
Where a birth was registered late, a sworn affidavit before a commissioner of oaths can explain how a name or date was established. A translation is issued by a certified translator or supported by that affidavit, and acceptance ultimately depends on the receiving institution such as IRCC, the IRB or a provincial registry.
