The main thing to confirm at booking is the speaker's variety, because standard Somali, the Maxaa speech most widely used, is not the same as the Maay language of parts of southern Somalia, and a claimant who speaks Maay may not be well served by a Maxaa interpreter in an Immigration and Refugee Board hearing. Clan and regional background can also shape vocabulary, so we ask where the speaker is from and match accordingly. Somali interpreting often involves recent trauma, so the interpreter keeps to a full, neutral rendering rather than softening or summarising.
For Canadian courts and tribunals we confirm what the specific court will accept, since interpreter requirements vary by province and case type. In healthcare the interpreter gives a complete, neutral rendering so consent and history stay accurate, which matters with elders and with women who may prefer a female interpreter, a preference we try to meet where possible. Certified Somali translation is written in the Latin alphabet, which Somali has used as its official script since 1972, though older or religious material may appear in Arabic script. A practical reality of Somali files is that reliable civil records are often missing after years without a functioning central registry, so a claimant may have few or no original documents. We deliver a full English or French translation of what does exist with a signed certificate of accuracy, or a sworn affidavit before a commissioner of oaths where the receiving body prefers one, which is common where a birth date is approximate or a record was reconstructed.
The records we handle include such birth, marriage and death records as exist, identity and travel papers, school and training documents, and the personal statements and affidavits that asylum files often rely on in place of official records. Names are transliterated consistently and any variant on the original is noted for the officer, and approximate dates are represented honestly rather than invented.
