Samoan carries a respectful register, the gagana fa'aaloalo used for chiefs and formal occasions, alongside everyday speech, and an interpreter reads which is in use in a formal setting. Many speakers also use English, so at booking we confirm the speaker's preferred language, which matters most for older community members more at ease in Samoan.

Because English is official in Samoa, civil documents are frequently issued in English or in a bilingual form, so a certified translation is often needed only where a record is in Samoan alone. Typical documents include birth, marriage and death certificates, identity and matai title papers, and school certificates.
For IRCC applications and provincial registrations a Samoan-language record is filed with a certified translation, while an English record may need only a certified copy.
