Certified translation for a Pothwari speaker usually runs from Urdu or English, because Pakistan issues civil and education records in those languages rather than in Pothwari. Pothwari itself, when written at all, uses the Perso-Arabic Shahmukhi script, and names are transliterated inconsistently between papers, so we match the spelling to the passport and note the variants.

Pothwari (Pahari-Pothwari) is an Indo-Aryan language spoken by around 4-6 million people in the Pothohar plateau of Pakistan (Rawalpindi-Islamabad area), Pakistani-administered Kashmir (where the Mirpuri variety is dominant), and a substantial UK diaspora. The Pothwari-speaking community in Canada is small relative to the UK community, found mainly within the broader Pakistani-Canadian population in the Toronto area.
