Mizo is closely related to a cluster of Chin and Zomi varieties across the India and Myanmar border, and while Mizo itself is fairly unified, a speaker who identifies as Chin may actually use a related but distinct variety. Mizo, also called Lushai or Duhlian, is a Tibeto-Burman language of the Kuki-Chin group, written in a Latin alphabet devised by Welsh missionaries, using circumflex vowels and a distinctive spelling, so a translator uses the correct forms rather than treating it as generic romanised text. Documents come from two directions: speakers from Mizoram in India generally hold records issued in English or Hindi, so translation may be limited, while speakers from the Chin areas of Myanmar often arrive through refugee streams with thinner and sometimes Burmese-language documentation.
