Mende interpreting is largely refugee and settlement work tied to Sierra Leone. Many speakers are comfortable in Krio or English for everyday matters but prefer Mende for anything detailed or difficult, such as an asylum account or a medical explanation, so a Mende interpreter is often the difference between a clear hearing and a partial one. At an Immigration and Refugee Board hearing an accurate first-person rendering can affect how testimony is understood.

There is little to translate from Mende, because Sierra Leone registers births, marriages and deaths in English and issues passports, court papers and school records in English, so a Mende applicant usually already holds English documents. On most files the certified work is preparing existing English records rather than translating Mende text.
Where Mende does appear, on church records, sworn family statements or letters of support, we translate it into English or French with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy from a certified translator, or a sworn affidavit before a commissioner of oaths where required. Mende has a historic Kikakui syllabary, but written material today is almost always in the Latin alphabet.
