Mambae interpreting arises mainly in refugee, family-reunification and settlement matters. Many Mambae speakers also use Tetum, the main lingua franca of Timor-Leste, and older people may speak Portuguese or Indonesian, so we confirm which language a person is most comfortable in before assigning, and can arrange Tetum or Portuguese where that is the better fit for an IRB hearing or IRCC interview.
Because the community is small, Mambae interpreters are assigned by telephone and video, reaching appointments anywhere in Canada, with availability arranged around a limited pool of speakers. Portuguese and Tetum are the official languages of Timor-Leste, so civil records such as birth, marriage and death certificates are issued in Portuguese or Tetum rather than Mambae. In practice document files for this community are usually Portuguese or Tetum to English or French translation, and genuinely Mambae-only material is rare and tends to be personal or community records.

Mambae is an Austronesian language spoken by around 200,000 people in central and eastern East Timor. East Timor's official languages are Tetum and Portuguese, so most Timorese civil documents are in those languages.
