Where a Makhuwa interpreter is needed it is usually for an Immigration and Refugee Board hearing, an IRCC interview or a medical appointment for someone who is more comfortable in Makhuwa than in Portuguese. Makhuwa has several regional varieties, so we ask where in northern Mozambique the speaker is from and match as closely as the small pool of interpreters allows; some speakers also manage Portuguese, and a Portuguese interpreter can be a practical fallback where a Makhuwa match is not immediately available.

There is very little to translate from Makhuwa, because Mozambique registers births, marriages and deaths in Portuguese and issues passports and court papers in Portuguese. On almost every file the certified translation is Portuguese to English rather than Makhuwa to English, and we handle that as the practical document work for a Makhuwa-speaking applicant.
