Lomwe is written in the Latin alphabet, but its speakers' civil records are issued in the official language of the country: Portuguese in Mozambique and English in Malawi. A Lomwe family's birth, marriage or identity record is therefore translated into English from Portuguese, or is already in English from Malawi, so a request for Lomwe translation is in practice a certified Portuguese to English translation or a review of an English Malawian record.
Where a rural birth was registered late or a record is missing, a sworn affidavit before a commissioner of oaths can accompany the translation to explain how a name or date was established. Output is issued by a certified translator or supported by affidavit, and acceptance ultimately depends on the receiving institution.

Lomwe is a Bantu language spoken by around 2.5 million people in northern Mozambique and parts of Malawi, where it's known as Lhomwe.
