Standard Swahili is widely understood across East Africa, so a Kiunguja speaker and a mainland Tanzanian or Kenyan speaker generally follow one another well, and one interpreter comfortable across the region usually serves them all. Coastal Zanzibari usage does carry its own vocabulary and Arabic-derived turns of phrase, though, and we note those where they matter for an Immigration and Refugee Board hearing, an IRCC interview or a hospital and settlement appointment.

What needs translating depends on the country a document comes from.
