The single most important detail at booking is which Karen language a speaker uses, because Sgaw Karen and Pwo Karen are the two main varieties and they are not mutually intelligible; other varieties such as Geba and Kayah exist as well. Sgaw Karen is written in a script derived from Burmese, and Pwo has its own related script, but many refugees grew up in camps with interrupted schooling and are more confident speaking than reading, so we match a speaker to an interpreter in the correct variety rather than assume one Karen serves all.
