Kannada has a marked gap between the formal written register and everyday spoken Kannada, and regional speech from around Bangalore, Mysore, the northern Karnataka districts and the coast differs enough that it is worth telling us where a speaker is from. Many urban Kannada speakers also use English at work, but medical detail, legal testimony and matters involving older relatives are far more accurate in Kannada, so we match the interpreter to both the region and the setting.
Interpreters work in IRCC and Immigration and Refugee Board interviews, Canadian court and tribunal hearings, hospital and clinic appointments covered by provincial privacy rules such as PHIPA and PIPEDA, and business and school meetings. Certified Kannada translation is the other half of most Kannada files. Kannada is written in its own rounded script, and civil records from Karnataka arrive with stamps, seals and endorsements that have to be translated in full rather than skipped. We deliver a complete English or French translation with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy, or a sworn affidavit before a commissioner of oaths where the receiving body asks for one.
The documents we see most are birth, marriage and death certificates, SSLC and PUC school records, degree certificates and transcripts for credential assessment, police clearances and affidavits prepared for permanent residence, study permits and family sponsorship. Names are transliterated from Kannada to match the passport spelling, with any variant noted for the officer, since an inconsistent name is a common reason a file is queried.
