It also varies by origin: Taiwanese Hokkien, the Amoy speech of Fujian, and the Penang or Singapore Hokkien of Southeast Asia differ in vocabulary and in the words borrowed from Malay, English or Japanese, so we ask where the speaker learned the language and match accordingly. Because Hokkien is not normally written as a language of record, document work for Hokkien speakers is really certified Chinese translation. Records from Taiwan use traditional characters, while those from mainland Fujian use simplified characters, and a translator has to read the right set and follow the naming conventions on each.
