Hainanese is not mutually intelligible with Mandarin or Cantonese, and it also differs from other Southern Min varieties such as Hokkien and Teochew, so an interpreter has to actually speak Hainanese rather than a neighbouring dialect. Many speakers came to Canada by way of Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore or Vietnam, and some older speakers use Mandarin only as a second language, which is why we confirm the speaker's background and home region when a booking is taken.

There is no distinct Hainanese script for civil purposes, so documents connected to Hainanese speakers are written in standard Chinese and are translated as Chinese records.
