Niger issues birth, marriage and identity records in French, sometimes alongside an Arabic-based Ajami note, so the bulk of an IRCC or refugee file is a French-to-English translation with names and place names set out consistently.
Zarma itself turns up mainly in a handwritten local note, a village attestation or a letter of support, which we translate where it appears. Djerma (Zarma, Zerma) is a Songhai language spoken by around 4 million people, primarily in southwestern Niger where it serves as a major regional language, plus border communities in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Nigeria.
