When you book, tell us whether the speaker uses Cape Verdean Crioulo or Guinea-Bissau Crioulo, and if possible the island or region, since the varieties differ and an interpreter should match the one the speaker actually uses. Many speakers also handle Portuguese, but for a court hearing, an IRB claim or a medical appointment it is safer to work in the speaker's first language rather than assume Portuguese is enough.

Crioulo has no single standard written form, and civil records from Cape Verde and Guinea-Bissau are issued in Portuguese, so certified document work usually runs from Portuguese into English or French rather than from Crioulo. We provide a full translation with a signed certificate of translation accuracy, or a sworn affidavit before a commissioner of oaths where a receiving body asks for one.

Crioulo refers to several closely related Portuguese-based creole languages spoken in West Africa, principally Cape Verdean Creole (Kriolu) of Cape Verde and Guinea-Bissau Creole (Kiriol) of Guinea-Bissau. Cape Verdean Creole has around 1 million speakers globally. The Cape Verdean community in Canada is small, and speakers are served through our national interpreter network.
