Most Catalan speakers also speak Spanish, so booking a Catalan interpreter is usually about a person giving a careful account in their strongest language, an Andorran national for whom Catalan is the everyday language, or a preference stated for cultural reasons. Catalan is a Romance language written in the Latin alphabet, close enough to Spanish and French that a Canadian reader recognises the shape of a document but far enough that the substance needs a translator who reads Catalan directly. The Valencian variety, official in the Valencia region, and the Balearic forms differ mainly in spelling and vocabulary, and a translator carries those correctly rather than flattening them into Spanish. Where a record comes from decides much of the work: in Andorra, births, marriages, deaths, notarial deeds and company records are genuine Catalan documents, while in Catalonia, Valencia and the Balearic Islands the registry text is often bilingual Catalan and Spanish or in Spanish alone, so we identify which language carries the substance.
