Kaqchikel is written in the Latin alphabet using the standardised Mayan orthography, with glottalised letters such as b' and tz', but official life in Guatemala runs in Spanish. A speaker's birth, marriage or RENAP identity record therefore arrives in Spanish, and the certified work is a Spanish to English translation prepared for IRCC or the IRB.

Cakchiquel (Kaqchikel) is a Mayan language spoken by around 600,000 people in the central highlands of Guatemala, particularly around Lake Atitlan and the city of Chimaltenango. It's one of more than 20 surviving Mayan languages in Mesoamerica.
