When you book, be clear that you need Burmese itself and not one of the other languages of Myanmar, such as Karen, Chin, Rohingya or Kachin, which are separate languages and not mutually intelligible with Burmese. Many people from Myanmar speak Burmese as a second language, so we also note the speaker's first language in case a different interpreter is the better fit.
Burmese is a tonal language with a formal written register that differs from everyday speech, and a capable interpreter carries a witness's meaning without smoothing it into something more polished than what was said. Certified Burmese translation deals with a script of its own, an abugida of rounded letters descended from the Mon writing tradition, in which the marks around each letter change the sound and cannot be dropped. We provide a full English or French translation with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy, or a sworn affidavit before a commissioner of oaths where the receiving body asks for one.
Common documents are birth and marriage certificates, household registration papers, national registration cards, school and university records and police clearances, many issued with seals that are translated rather than skipped. Some refugees hold few original papers, so where a record is partial or reconstructed we translate exactly what is present and note gaps for the officer; names are transliterated to match the passport spelling.
