Bubi (Bohobe) is a Bantu language of the Bubi people of Bioko Island in Equatorial Guinea, and it is mainly a spoken home language. Nearly all speakers also use Spanish, and many younger people are stronger in it, so the most helpful step at booking is to tell us the speaker's stronger language; where Spanish serves better we match that rather than assume Bubi is needed.
When a genuine Bubi interpreter is called for, it is usually an older speaker at a medical, legal or settlement appointment, or an IRCC interview. Because the community across Canada is small, interpreting is generally arranged by telephone or video, with in-person attendance in the larger centres where a suitable interpreter is nearby. Bubi is written in the Latin alphabet where it is written at all, but it rarely appears on a certificate, so there is seldom a Bubi-language text to translate. Equatorial Guinea issues birth, marriage, death and school records in Spanish, its main official language, so a Bubi family's paperwork is normally translated from Spanish into English as a certified translation.
