Bosnian Interpreters in Canada

Prism Linguistics arranges professional Bosnian interpreters and certified Bosnian translation across Canada, for immigration and citizenship files, legal matters and medical appointments. Many Bosnian speakers came to Canada as refugees during and after the wars of the 1990s and settled across southern Ontario and the Prairie cities. Bosnian is closely related to Croatian and Serbian, which shapes how both the spoken and the written work is handled.

Bosnian Court, Medical and IRCC Interpreters

Because Bosnian, Croatian and Serbian are mutually intelligible, one interpreter can often serve speakers of all three, but we still confirm which standard a person identifies with, since terminology and, in Serbian, the script can differ. For a hearing this matters more for precise terms and for a speaker's comfort than for basic understanding. We check with the court what it requires, and Prism is a private agency, not a court-appointed body.

Bosnian interpreters attend IRCC and citizenship interviews, Immigration and Refugee Board hearings, hospital and clinic visits handled under PHIPA and PIPEDA, and legal and settlement meetings. Interpreters attend in person in the larger centres and join by telephone or video for appointments anywhere in the country.

Common settings include legal and court interpreting, medical and hospital interpreting, IRCC and Immigration and Refugee Board (IRB) interviews, and police and enforcement work. See all on-site interpreting options or start a free quote.

Certified Bosnian Translation

Certified Bosnian translation covers records issued before and after the 1990s. Bosnian is written mainly in the Latin alphabet, though older or official papers may appear in Cyrillic, and a translator reads both and knows the small vocabulary differences that separate the Bosnian, Croatian and Serbian standards.

The documents we handle most are birth, marriage and death certificates, citizenship and residence records, diplomas and transcripts, and court papers. Each translation is issued by a certified translator with a signed certificate of accuracy, or supported by a sworn affidavit before a commissioner of oaths, and the source and English versions are returned as a matched set. Acceptance ultimately depends on the receiving institution.

For documents rather than spoken interpreting, see certified Bosnian translation, our full Bosnian translation services, or general document translation. Every translation moves through our TEP workflow — translation, editing and proofreading by separate linguists — with free revisions.

About the Bosnian Language

Bosnian is one of three standardized varieties of the language formerly known as Serbo-Croatian - the other two being Serbian and Croatian. The three are mutually intelligible in speech but have distinct vocabulary, spelling conventions, and (for Serbian) script. Bosnian uses the Latin alphabet and has around 2.5 million native speakers. In Canada the Bosnian community formed largely from refugees of the 1992-1995 Bosnian War, with established communities in Toronto and Hamilton plus smaller populations in Vancouver, Edmonton, and Windsor. Most of our Bosnian translation work is IRCC family sponsorship paperwork and the civil documents tied to that community's now-second-generation immigration story.

Bosnian Interpreter FAQs

Can one interpreter cover Bosnian, Croatian and Serbian?

Often yes, since the three are mutually intelligible. We still confirm which standard the speaker prefers so the terminology fits.

Do you read Cyrillic as well as Latin script?

Yes. Bosnian records may appear in either script, and both are translated.

Are the translations suitable for a citizenship application?

We provide certified or affidavit-supported translations for IRCC and citizenship use, though acceptance ultimately depends on the receiving institution.

How do I get a quote for a Bosnian interpreter or translation?

Tell us the language, the setting and the date through our quote form or by phone. We return a written quote with the exact price and turnaround, usually within 60 minutes during business hours, before you commit.
