Standard Bengali, or Sylheti? This is the first question we ask, because many Bangladeshi-Canadian families come from Sylhet and Sylheti diverges enough from standard Bengali that a speaker of one does not always follow the other cleanly. In a maternal-health appointment or an IRB hearing that gap is where detail is lost, so we match a Sylheti speaker where a client uses it. Chittagonian is a further variety we flag the same way, and we note the home region at intake.
Nationally, Bengali interpreting comes up in refugee and family immigration matters, in hospitals and mental-health settings, and in schools where a parent needs to take part in a meeting about a child. The interpreter works in the first person and holds the register the speaker uses rather than summarising for the clinician or officer. Certified Bengali translation is the other half of most files. Bangla is written in its own script, an abugida distinct from the Devanagari of Hindi, and the records come from two countries. Bangladeshi applicants bring birth registration certificates from the national online system, national identity cards and marriage or nikah records, while applicants from Indian West Bengal bring civil registration certificates in Bengali. We render the script fields, the official seals and any handwritten entries, and report the issuing authority as printed so a sponsorship or permanent residence file stays internally consistent.
Transliteration of names is the recurring friction point. Bengali sounds map several ways into English, so one family can appear as Chowdhury, Choudhury or Chaudhary across a passport and a certificate, and a discrepancy like that invites a query. A certified translation should follow the passport spelling and note the alternatives against the original. Older Bangladeshi births were sometimes registered late, so a file may include a supporting affidavit that itself needs translating. Work is issued by a certified translator or carries a sworn affidavit before a commissioner of oaths, and acceptance ultimately depends on the receiving institution.
