Baluchi (Balochi) is spoken across the Baloch regions of Pakistan, Iran and Afghanistan, and it divides into three broad groups, Eastern (Rakhshani), Western and Southern (Makrani). A speaker from coastal Makran does not always follow an Eastern speaker with ease, so the most useful thing to tell us when booking is the person's country and home district, and we match a close variety rather than assume a single standard.

Written Baluchi is uncommon in official life. It is set down in a Perso-Arabic script that reads right to left, with no single fixed spelling, so the same name can appear several ways. Because Pakistan registers civil events in Urdu and English, Iran in Persian and Afghanistan in Dari or Pashto, a Baloch family's birth, marriage and identity records are normally translated into English from Urdu or Persian rather than from Baluchi itself.
